Mary Kom
“Mary Kom” who doesn’t know this name?
An ordinary girl from the Kom tribe of Manipur, India who bravely pursued her dreams without bothering about the bars and proved the world that nothing is bigger than the desire to win.
The path was not easy for her as the community as well as her parents was not supporting her and considers that sports are only for boys. She started training in Imphal and used to travel distances to learn boxing. She left her hometown and did her further studies from Imphal and from there the journey of her boxing career begins.
In 2000, Mary won the state boxing championship and she dominated the boxing ring for several years. After her marriage she took a break from sports being much engaged in family and rising her two childs. Everyone thought that she will never return to boxing ring but what a dynamic comeback she made.
After giving birth to her first child she stared training once again her dedication towards her career didn’t changes.
She became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014 at Incheon, South Korea and is the first female boxer to win gold medal at 2018 commonwealth games, not only this but she is also the only boxer to become Asian Amateur Boxing Champion for a record six times.
After her sixth world title in 2018, the Government of Manipur has given her the title ‘Meethoi Leima’ which means exceptional or great lady in a felicitation ceremony held in Imphal on 11 December 2018. She became the most successful boxer at world championships in 2019.
Mary Kom proved that “champions are not born, they are made.”
